Important Update: Boundary Changes, School Consolidations/Closures
As you are aware, Canyons School District is reviewing elementary school-boundary changes and consolidation/closures to respond to declining elementary enrollment and lay the groundwork for upgrading schools to better serve combined school communities.
We want to thank all who have participated in this months-long Boundary and Enrollment Study. Feedback from families and employees has been instrumental in guiding the latest round of Long-Range Planning Committee recommendations, which are being put forward for additional public input. You are receiving this message, per Utah Code Section 53G-4-402(24), because some of the newly-proposed recommendations under consideration could affect your school.
As previously communicated, the committee has adjusted its recommendations for the East Central region. Granite, Park Lane, Willow Canyon, Lone Peak, and Quail Hollow elementary schools will continue operating with the existing boundaries for the 2026-2027 school year. Any changes that might ultimately be approved would not take effect until the 2027-2028 school year. This timeline has not changed.
During public hearings and Board meetings, and in written comments, families and employees have expressed a desire for the District to keep communities together while honoring existing middle and high school feeder patterns. The proposals detailed below are derived from those expressed priorities.
In order to provide clear notice, allow time for our communities to review the updated proposals, and ensure continued opportunity for meaningful feedback before any further consideration by the Board, the
District is restarting a full 90-day public input period.
Detailed information can be found on our website, and input easily given by submitting comments via our online survey tool or by emailing: [email protected]. The District has also scheduled two additional public hearings:
Tuesday, March 10, 6 p.m. — Granite Elementary, 9760 S. 3100 East, Sandy
Thursday, March 19, 6 p.m. — Park Lane Elementary, 9955 Eastdell Dr., Sandy
These hearings will include an overview of the following revised proposals and provide an opportunity for attendees to share comments.
Proposal A:
- The southeastern portion of Granite Elementary’s boundary (about 40 students) would be included in Lone Peak Elementary’s boundary to align with the topography of the Dimple Dell Park (the area south of Dimple Dell Road between Dimple Dell and Wasatch Blvd).
- The remainder of Granite Elementary’s boundary would be combined with Quail Hollow Elementary’s boundary and these students would attend Quail Hollow, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year.
- Granite’s EEC would stay with the newly combined school community at Quail Hollow.
- Estimated combined enrollment: 555.
- This proposal preserves the Albion/Brighton feeder pattern.
- Quail Hollow’s preschool classes and ABS unit would be relocated to another school.
Proposal B:
- All of Park Lane Elementary’s boundary would be combined with Willow Canyon Elementary’s boundary and these students would attend Willow Canyon beginning in the 2027-2028 school year.
- Park Lane’s ACC would stay with the newly combined school community.
- Estimated combined enrollment: 580.
- This proposal preserves the Eastmont/Jordan feeder pattern.
- Willow Canyon has a better Facility Condition Index score than Park Lane.
- An estimated 100 Park Lane students could still walk.
- Willow Canyon’s two preschools would be relocated to another school.
Why Canyons is considering boundary adjustments
Utah’s birth rate is falling and soaring housing prices are reshaping where young families can afford to live. These demographic realities are driving enrollment declines throughout much of the state. When a school becomes too small, it can be a challenge to offer the full range of academic programs, extracurricular activities, and services that families expect and students deserve. This boundary study is about planning together so all students continue to benefit from optimal class sizes and a full choice of academic programs.
Again, thank you for reviewing these proposals and participating in the public input period. We appreciate your continued engagement and support of Canyons School District.
